Abram
Abram fled from a difficult situation.
Genesis 12: 9-10 Abram journeyed on, continuing toward the Negev. 10 Now there was a
famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was
severe in the land.
Abram saw a famine in the land he was given by God to dwell in. He looked at this difficult
situation of a famine in the land with his natural eyes. Looking with his natural eyes
caused him to take action according to his own thinking. Abram went to sojourn in the land
of Egypt. Abram made a choice to flee from the difficult situation he saw before him.
Abram ran from the difficult situation in front of him in his own reasoning and thinking. He
did not seek God in the midst of this difficult situation. He did not seek God’s provision for
himself and those who were with him in the land. Abram chose to flee from the difficult
situation.
Genesis 12: 20 - Genesis 13: 1 Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they
escorted him away, with his wife and all that belonged to him. Genesis 13: 1 So Abram
went up from Egypt to the Negev, he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with
him.
God returned Abram back to the very place he had fled from. God returned Abram to the
difficult situation that he had fled from - the famine was still in the land. Abram only avoided
the difficult situation for a short time when he fled from it. God returned Abram to the exact
place and the exact situation he had tired to escape !!!
God does not want us to flee difficult situations !!! God has equipped us with all that we
need to triumph, be victorious and overcome. He has equipped us with tools and weapons
to walk as overcomers at all times. God has given us promises in His Word to stand on in
the midst of every difficult situation.
God wants us to seek Him and His provision in the midst of every difficult situation. He has
said He is our provider. He has said that He is the God of more than enough. God will
provide abundantly all that we need to overcome every difficult situation.
God has said He is an ever present help in time of trouble. God has said He will not leave
us or forsake us. We triumph over every difficult situation through Him. He is our ever
present help in times of trouble !!!
Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
God has said we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. He has said we
overwhelming conquer, we triumph, we overcome, through Him who loved us.
Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Romans 8:37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved
us.
1John 4:4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is
He who is in you than he who is in the world.
1John 5:4-5 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that
has overcome the world--our faith. 5 Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who
believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
Jonah
Jonah fled from doing a difficult task. Jonah fled from doing a task he did not want to
complete.
God had told Jonah to go and speak a message from Him to the land of Nineveh. Jonah
was to go and cry against the city of Nineveh because their wickedness had come before
God.
Jonah 1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he
went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went
down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Jonah fled from speaking God’s message to Nineveh. Jonah fled from completing a difficult
task he did not want to complete. Jonah hated the Assyrians whose capital was Nineveh.
Jonah did not want to give the Assyrians in Nineveh an opportunity to repent. Jonah
wanted judgment and destruction to come upon Nineveh and upon all Assyria.
Jonah 3:5-10 Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a fast and put
on sackcloth from the greatest to the least of them. 6 When the word reached the king of
Nineveh, he arose from his throne, laid aside his robe from him, covered himself with
sackcloth and sat on the ashes. 7 He issued a proclamation and it said, "In Nineveh by the
decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not
let them eat or drink water. 8 "But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and
let men call on God earnestly that each may turn from his wicked way and from the violence
which is in his hands. 9 "Who knows, God may turn and relent and withdraw His burning
anger so that we will not perish." 10 When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their
wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would
bring upon them. And He did not do it.
Jonah 4:2 He prayed to the LORD and said, "Please LORD, was not this what I said while
I was still in my own country? Therefore in order to forestall this I fled to Tarshish, for I
knew that You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in
lovingkindness, and one who relents concerning calamity.
Jonah fled from speaking God’s message to Nineveh to forestall God’s grace, compassion
and lovingkindness coming upon Nineveh at their repentance. Jonah fled because he did
not want God to relent concerning the calamity that would come because of Nineveh’s
wickedness. Johan fled to not complete the task God had given Him to accomplish.
Jonah fled by ship from speaking the message of God. A great storm arose against the
ship, the crew was forced to throw all cargo overboard. Lots were cast to find on whose
account this calamity had overtaken them and the lot fell to Jonah. The crew tried to row
to shore but could not for the storm came harder against them. After praying for mercy
Jonah was tossed overboard. God caused a great fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah was in
the belly of the whale three days and three nights.
Jonah 2:10 – Jonah 3:3 Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up
onto the dry land. Jonah 3:1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time,
saying, 2 "Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am
going to tell you." 3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the
LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days' walk.
The great fish vomited Jonah upon dry land. God again spoke and told Jonah to go to
Nineveh and proclaim what God told him to proclaim. Jonah arose and in obedience went
to the city of Nineveh according to God’s command.
Jonah was unable to avoid completing the difficult task through fleeing. God brought him
back to dry land (I believe the dry land Jonah was vomited out on was very not far from the
city of Nineveh.)
We must not avoid completing the difficult tasks God gives us to complete. We must not
flee from them. We must choose to obey God and complete the task He has given us.
Fleeing just puts it off for short while; we will eventually have to complete it.
God is our help in every task He gives us to complete. God has given us the Holy Spirit as
our helper. We are never alone; He does not leave us alone, defenseless or helpless.
God gives us all the help we need to complete every task He gives to us.
Psalms 121:2 My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.
Isaiah 41:10 'Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your
God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous
right hand.'
Isaiah 41:13 "For I am the LORD your God, who upholds your right hand, Who says to
you, 'Do not fear, I will help you.'
Hebrews 4:16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that
we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
2Corinthians 9:8 (KJV) And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that in
everything, always having all self-sufficiency, you may abound to every good work;
Philippians 2:13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good
pleasure.
2Thessalonians 2:16-17 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father,
who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, 17 comfort and
strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.
Titus 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be
ready to every good work.
Hebrew 13:21 (KJV) make you perfect in every good work to do His will, working in you
that which is well pleasing in His sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and
ever. Amen.
Elijah
Elijah fled from a difficult situation
In 1 Kings 18 Elijah called down the fire of God on Mt. Carmel. He had slain all the
prophets of Baal with the sword at the brook of Kishon. He had ran before Ahab's chariot
into the city of Jezreel.
King Ahab in 1 Kings 19 reported to Jezebel all that Elijah had done at Mt. Carmel.
Jezebel then sent a messenger to Elijah with this message: "So may the gods do to me and
even more, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by tomorrow about this time."
1 Kings 19: 3 And he was afraid and arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba,
which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
Elijah fled from the threat of Jezebel to take his life. Elijah fled from the difficult situation in
fear. He did not put his trust in God to protect, keep or help him. He did not turn his eyes
to God or cry to God for help. Fear consumed him as he heard the words of Jezebel and
he ran for his life.
Elijah ran to the wilderness and was sustained by an angel. Elijah then fled to Mt. Horeb,
which is called the mountain of the Lord.
1 Kings 19: 9 Then he came there to a cave and lodged there; and behold, the word of the
LORD came to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
God asked Elijah "What are you doing here?" God asks this question to Elijah once again
when He speaks to him in the still small voice.
1 Kings 19: 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and
stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, a voice came to him and said, "What are you
doing here, Elijah?"
God asked Elijah twice, "What are you doing here?" I believe God was asking Elijah
“Why did you run here in fear?” “Why did you not stand and confront your
enemies in My power and My strength?” “Why did you not seek My help and My
protection from your enemies?” “Why did you run and not seek Me?”
1 Kings 19: 15 The LORD said to him, "Go, return on your way to the wilderness of
Damascus, and when you have arrived, you shall anoint Hazael king over Aram;
God told Elijah to go, return to the place he had fled from.
We must not flee difficult situations in fear. We must cry out to God for His protection, His
safety and His keeping in the midst of the attack of our enemy. We must use the weapons
and the tools He has given us to defeat our enemy.
Psalms 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil,
for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalms 41:2 The LORD will protect him and keep him alive, And he shall be called
blessed upon the earth; And do not give him over to the desire of his enemies.
Psalms 91:10 No evil will befall you, Nor will any plague come near your tent.
Psalms 91:15 "He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will
rescue him and honor him.
Psalms 112:7 He will not fear evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.
Psalms 121:7 The LORD will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul.
Isaiah 54:17 "No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that
accuses you in judgment you will condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the
LORD, And their vindication is from Me," declares the LORD.
John 17:15 "I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil
one
2Thessalonians 3:2 and that we will be rescued from perverse and evil men; for not all
have faith
2Thessalonians 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from
the evil one.
2Timothy 4:18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to
His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen
1John 5:18 We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God
keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.
God does not want us to flee from difficult situations and tasks. He wants us to rely on Him
in the midst of them all. He wants us to have faith and trust in Him. He wants us to seek
Him, His help and His provision. He will provide all that we need to triumph over, be
victorious in and overcome every difficult situation and task.
He has trained and equipped us. He wants us to rise up and use the weapons and tools
His has given into our hands.
Do not flee the difficult situation or task. God will be your help. He has provided all we
need.
